Dovelands Primary School came into being in August 1996 following the amalgamation
of the Infant and Junior Schools which had been in existence since the early
years of this century. Both schools had enjoyed good reputations in the community
and the new school aims to build on these traditions to continue to provide
a high quality education for children.
We cater for children across the 4-11 age range, most of whom are drawn from
the Western Park and Danehills areas of Leicester. These are mixed communities
of mainly owner occupied housing to the west of Leicester City Centre. The
school is maintained by the Leicester City Education Authority which took
over responsibility for City schools in April 1997 following the reorganisation
of local government in Leicestershire.
Dovelands is housed in two adjoining buildings. One was recently constructed
by the County Council, following a long campaign by governors, parents and
staff It provides 9 teaching bases, plus a Nursery, all of which have modern
facilities. The other is Edwardian in origin and we hope that in the near
future the City Council will be able to obtain government funding in order
to undertake a programme of renovation work which will bring the facilities
in this building up to the same standard as exist in the rest of the school.
During the Autumn term of 2000 a new classroom was built internally to cater
for Year 1 and 2 children. A computer suite was introduced in October 1999
to further develop ICT ( Information and Communications Technology ). The
computer suite was completely upgraded during the summer term of 2001 to provided
outstanding facilities for our children and teachers. New cluster areas of
computers, with network and Internet access, were also fitted around the school.
This means children have even greater access to the World Wide Web to enhance
their studies in other curriculum areas.
In September 2001, we had 450 children on roll, with an additional 57 in
our Nursery unit. Most of our children enter the school in the Nursery unit
at the age of 4. This is usually followed by a period in the Reception class.
The rest of the school is arranged into two Key Stage departments: Key Stage
1 caters for 5 to 7 year olds and Key Stage 2 caters for the 7 to 11 age range.
At the age of eleven the children transfer to a number of Secondary Schools
in the City and County including our designated schools, Fullhurst Community
College, and Leicester New College with whom we have good working links.
