2017/18
PE and School Sport Impact 2017/18
It has been another action packed year for sport and physical activity at Dovelands primary school and there have been some real highlights. For the 2nd year in a row we have been awarded the School Games Gold Mark.
The mark rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across the school and into the community and can be used by Ofsted as part of their inspection framework when judging a school.
Some of our most notable sporting achievements this year were the year 6 boys’ football team playing in the school finals at the King Power Stadium. The dance team winning most creative dance at the school dance competition and getting to perform their dance at the King Power and finally the table tennis team being crowned Leicester school champions.
This year 147 children from KS2 took part in a range of inter school competitions and it is hoped that this number will continue to rise next academic year as more sports are added to the schools competition calendar. Our intra team activities (class v class) were also very popular and this format has been timetabled for next year and will include for the first time KS1 children being able to compete against their peers.
Our Wednesday dance sessions have once again been a big hit with the children. Every child in the school from reception through to year 6 has benefited from a block of dance activities. It was always nice to see lots of parents and carers join us for their child’s dance performance and of course join in the fun.
Through our partnership with the Leicester City School Sport and Physical Activity Network a selected group of children from KS2 took part in an early morning energy club aimed at developing and increasing their self-esteem and confidence. The club focused on elements such as nutrition, physical activity, rest and relaxation. The club proved very popular with the children and we have been chosen to pilot a similar club for children in KS1.
We have good sporting links with other local primary schools within the area and have played competitive fixtures against both Christ the King and Inglehurst Junior School. The school was also part of the QUAD event this year which sees four schools – Dovelands, Parks, Forest lodge and Stokes Wood compete against each other in a variety of different sporting activities. This inter team competition is something we will be involved in 2018/19.
Extra-curricular clubs which also includes break and lunch time activities have proved popular once again with over 258 children from both KS1 and KS2 taking part on a regular basis. For 2018/19 we hope to add more extra-curricular activities.
The children at Dovelands really enjoy sessions that are delivered by local coaches and clubs. This year the children have taken part in table tennis, badminton and cricket with the sessions having sustainable exit routes for the children to continue playing.
Finally we look forward to another action packed year of PE and school sport in 2018/19.
